So I've once again dug out my old rules for the game "Full Thrust". It's a fast and fun space fleet combat game that lots of folks use to game Trek, BSG, Star Wars or (gasp) the Full Thrust setting itself. The basic system has drives, "beam" weapons (3 grades), shields, missiles, "photon torpedos", hull armor, fire control systems, etc. You can even choose from "Cinematic" movement (space ships fly like water ships) or "Vector" movement (a system that pays lip-service to physics). All in all, there are tools to play just about any space fleet combats you can imagine, and the Internet is full of conversions for popular settings.
It's probably a symptom of some sort of depression that I'm obsessing over this game again. I tend to go into heavy avoidance mode when I'm upset, and diving into wargaming rules is a good way to escape. But for whatever reason, I'm seriously considering trying to get Christy to play the "intro" scenario with me. I already have some ships we can use (Old Silent Death fighters that can pass for capital ships in a pinch), and quite literally all we need is about an hour of free time and two willing participants. That last part might be the trick though, as Christy isn't really interested in naval stuff, either water or space.
As for my own daydreaming, I've gone from thinking it would rules to grab some ST:TOS ships and duke it out to thinking seriously about grabbing some of the "official" miniatures. I also kind of like the idea of scratch-building spaceships (lots of FF players do that) out of wood and spare parts. That would at least be free!
Oh mercurial nature, where will you carry me tomorrow?
