Well, I've made few abortive attempts at assembling a blog entry that furthers my "Warhammer Chariots" idea, but it's becoming increasingly clear to me that this isn't the right venue. So maybe once I get something working, I'll find a way to post it up or something.
So in the mean time, I'm going to stick to op-ed sorts of topic instead of game design.
On a miniatures related post, I picked up some Spugs from Rattlehead Games the other day. A nice place to order stuff, btw. Highly recommended. At any rate, these "space bugs" are like bipedal grasshoppers with large guns, and they're just cheezy enough to really appeal to me. Because they're quadrapedal, they actually look like 50's era "movie aliens", and are really cool. I haven't had the chance to paint them up yet, but I'm looking forward to it. In fact, I'm not even sure what I'm going to do with them, though I'm sure I'll wind up using them for Chain Reaction.
The "Spug" story is actually a heartwarming tale of entrepreneureal serendipity. The sculptor (a nobody from the UK) sculpted them just to see if he could. As it turns out, he works for a spin-casting shop that lets him use the equipment for personal projects or something. Well, he posted some photos on a miniatures related forum, and asked if anyone was interested in some figures like that. To make a not-so-long story shorter, within a few days he had a US distributor and a contract with a game company to produce a line of "spugs". My guess is he's casting spugs as fast as he can! Now I'm sure he's not going to get rich off of this project, but what a neat thing to happen to someone.
I got a "squad pack" of 6 Spugs, and I'll probably buy another one to go with it once I'm done painting these. The sculptor is supposedly working on a power armor version (exoskeletal armor for exoskeletal aliens? I love it!), more weapon options, and some more basic trooper poses. (He only has two so far)
Now if I could only find a few hours of free time with no kids or chores to interrupt me. Ok, I'm dreaming.
