My JCFigures "Appleseed"-ish miniatures came in the mail yesterday. Groovy stuff, and very fast service. Here is a brief review of the figures. Sorry, no pictures.
The "grunts" are in 4 parts - legs, torso, head and weapon/hands. All pieces had large vent "sprue" chunks still on them, though the flash was minimal. One of the torsos had a lead "tumor" around the waste, and I'm still trying to scrape it down enough to glue on to the legs. But other than that, cleanup was pretty painless.
Although in theory the different parts allow for some poseability, in practice there aren't a lot of ways these parts can go together correctly. However, since there are three distinct leg patterns, that will lend some variability to the figures, and I might be able to position the heads in different orientations, though they're large enough that they don't have a lot of room between the shoulder pads.
The weapons (assault rifles) supplied with these figures are very realistic in size, which means they look sort of wimpy compared to a lot of other figures. I don't usually go for the cartoonishly gigantic weapons, but these may be a little dainty, even for my tastes. Still, they fit the figures very nicely and have enough detail that they ought to paint up well, so I can't complain. More importantly, they have the figure's hands molded on to them, so it would be very hard to replace them. :-)
One thing I hadn't noticed from the online pictures is that the "Grunts" appear to be female. They are thinner in person than they appear in on the website, and they are all sporting high heels. Not "Bubblegum Crisis" stilletto high, but definitely higher than cowboy boots. This does fit in with the "gals only" theme of JCFigures, so I shouldn't have been surprised, but I was anyway.
The commander figure I got is technically a "light infantry" commander, and she has neither armor nor an assault rifle. Instead, she'd wearing what looks like combat fatigues made from wetsuit material. I guess because it won't snag on stuff and tear? :-) She's carrying duel pistols and has a very dynamic pose. The figure itself was cleanly cast and ought to paint up nicely.
It's worth mentioning that all of these figures came with an upscale rounded 1 inch "slotta base" of the sort that Warmachine and Alpha Forge use. The figure's tabs don't fit the slots very accurately, and they'll require some trimming to mount, but that's not a big deal.
The figures themselves are large-ish, and fit in very nicely with the recent Reaper sized figures. Though I haven't measured them, I'd consider them 30mm. They look good next to my Spugs and Hydrissians, though they are pretty large compared to my GW or VOID figures, which are more towards 28mm. You wouldn't think 2mm would make much difference, but consider a 6 foot person standing next to a 5'7" person. It's only 5", but it matters, especially if the tall person isn't particularly slender and the short person is.
All in all, these gals will make a great fire team for use in my so-far hypothetical scifi gaming.
