Our FLGS had its monthly "WAB" day on Sunday. In theory, we're gearing up for a big "Dark Ages" campaign in the spring, but the shop was pretty much dead. A few guys were there, and everyone agreed that the campaign should be cool, but there weren't many format decisions made or anything.
But one nice thing happened - a guy was there with his kid (I'm guessing around 12 years old). They were both LoTR players who were interested in warhammer ancients. The shop owner had just started up a typical "Romans Vs. Gauls" wargame with them when I arrived, and I took over command of the Romans. As is only proper, the Romans were greatly outnumbered, and almost sure to fall beneath the weight of the enemy numbers. :-) The kid was in charge of the Gauls, with Dad giving some advice, helping him out with the rules, and taking copious notes.
To make a long story short, the kid played a decent game for a first-timer, and although I don't exactly have a lot of WAB experience myself, I think the Romans gave a credible defense before being hacked down almost to a man. :-) The game was fun for me because the odds were so overwhelmingly against me. With almost no way to win, I could concentrate on being hard to kill (which as it turns out is something Romans do well in WAB). The kid got the fun of mowing down lots of Romans and rolling LOTS of dice, so I think fun was had by all. I always like to see kids getting into the hobby. Fresh perspective is good to keep us from all turning into old men, and today's kid is next decade's serious wargamer.
All of this has rekindled my interest in my Andalusians, so I may need to do a little painting on them this week. We'll see if that works out or not.
