Psychologically buoyed by my Berbers' completion, I'm now starting to plan two 500pts armies, one of Andalusians and the other of Vikings. I already have quite a few figures purchased, so this project is purely intellectual at this point.
I originally got the Vikings because of the excellent Shieldwall WAB suppliment (and because Vikings R k3wl), and the Andalusians because of an old movie called "The Longships", that features Vikings fighting some Andalusians. While I have around 2000pts worth of Viking lead, I only have around 500 to 700 pts of Andalusians. Though 2000pts is "Tournament size", lots of guys seem to be playing with 1000pts or even 500pts "starter armies".
WAB at 500pts requires you to relax some of the unit size restrictions and to play with units too small to claim their full "rank bonuses", but you can still get the feel of an army's capabilities at that size.
So here are my attempted lists:
Andalusians:
Leader: Amir on horseback
Cavalry: 5 Jinetes (accompanied by the leader)
15 Spearmen backed by 12 archers
8 Javelin armed skirmishers
12 Crossbow men
The spearmen and archers will either deploy in one sold 27 man block (7x4, with a weak rear rank) or split into separate units, with archers and crossbowmen flanking the spear core. The cavarly are very flexible but weak, so I'll either send them 'round on a long flank march or hold them back until the right moment.
It might be fun to plump out a fully mounted force as an "early response team" that would be sent out to counter raiders (like Vikings, for example). Even just swapping out the crossbow guys would give me 5 more horsemen. That's one thing I'm starting to like about the 500pts format - you really have to make "themed" forces!
Vikings:
Leader: Hersir on foot
3x6 Hirdmen with mixed weapons and command groups
8 Bondi spearmen to
6 Bondi archers, since even Vikings can use a little firepower
The Hirdmen are in very small units of only 6 men, but they're so tough that they should be ok. If I need to, I can combine two of the units to get some more rank bonus.
I'm considering not bringing along any Bondi of any sort, which would give me an extra unit of Hirdmen and maybe a Berserker. I'm not sure Bondi went on raiding expeditions anyway, being more of a "home guard" force.
